Find Someone on WhatsApp, Then Find Out Who They Really Are
WhatsApp has no name search. Here's how finding someone on the app works, plus how to verify a stranger's number before you meet or send money.

If you’re here, you probably already know how to find someone on Snapchat isn't the simple search-and-scroll it is on Instagram or Facebook. While it’s true that Snapchat wasn't built for public discovery, there are three real ways in.

There’s no public directory of users on Snapchat, and you can't type a first and last name into a search bar and scroll through faces until one looks right. The platform is designed around close friend groups instead of public discovery, which is exactly why "how do I find someone on Snapchat" is one of its most common questions. However, three methods might still work.
If you already know their exact username:
Double-check spelling before assuming the account doesn't exist, especially with underscores, periods, or numbers that are easy to mistype.
If the person is already saved in your phone contacts:
This only works if the number is saved correctly and the person hasn't turned off "Let others find me using my phone number." A lot of people have that switched off by default now (more on that below).
Every Snapchat account has a Snapcode, which is a unique yellow QR-style image tied to that profile. If someone shares their Snapcode with you, or you spot one on a business card, event flyer, or another social profile, open Snapchat's camera and hold it over the code. The profile loads instantly. It's the fastest method available, but it only works if the other person has actively shared their code somewhere you can access it.
Snapchat gives users granular control over who can find them:
Locked-down privacy settings are common on Snapchat for all kinds of reasons, but if you've hit a wall searching for someone whose number you already have, and you're trying to make sense of a broader pattern, like a partner who's become harder to reach or more private online in general, our guide on signs a partner may be hiding a social media account walks through what that tends to look like beyond a single app.
Finding a profile is only half the job. A few things worth checking on the profile itself:
If a specific photo doesn't sit right, ClarityCheck's reverse image search can add useful context. Using it, you might be able to surface publicly available places that photo, or a visually similar one, appears online. That won't confirm someone's identity on its own, but it can help you decide whether what you're looking at deserves a closer look. Our guide on running a reverse image search on a suspected catfish covers what these searches can and can't tell you in more depth.
If you’re suspicious that someone is hiding a Snapchat account, you might also have noticed other signs of secretive or unusual online behavior.
Our breakdown of apps people use to have private conversations covers what those broader patterns tend to look like, and our article on signs a photo may not be what it seems is worth a read if a profile picture is the piece that's bothering you.
This kind of searching is more common than it might feel to you. A Pew Research Center study found that 34% of partnered U.S. adults have looked through their significant other's phone without that person's knowledge, with women reporting it (42%) more often than men. Wanting clarity isn't unusual; it's one of the most common reasons people start looking in the first place. However, you should never look through someone’s phone without their consent.
That said, Snapchat remains one of the most-used apps among teens and young adults. Pew Research's 2025 teen survey found that 55% of U.S. teens use Snapchat and 46% use it daily, so if the person you're searching for falls in that age range, there's a good chance an account exists, even if privacy settings are making it hard to locate. If your search leads somewhere else entirely, our guides to how to find someone on TikTok and finding someone on Instagram or social media walk through similar methods for other platforms.
